Many of us move through life feeling disconnected from the person we truly want to be. We have dreams we haven’t reached, joy that feels just out of grasp, and days that blur together in a “Groundhog Day” loop. And if you’re anything like me—or so many of my peers who have reached middle age—you may find yourself asking, “What now?” or even “Is this all there is?”
I’ve written about this before, but it’s worth repeating: If we want to shift into a life we love—one filled with meaning, joy, and fulfillment—we must begin by questioning the stories we’ve been telling ourselves.
Meet (Insert Your Name)—A Blank Canvas
Let me introduce you to my friend, (insert your name). She/he is (insert your age), lives at (insert your address), has (insert number of kids/none), and is (insert marital status). That’s it. These are the facts—nothing more, nothing less.
Now, take a moment to visualize yourself in this way—stripped of all the labels, judgments, and interpretations you’ve carried.
Every other part of your identity? It’s just a story.
The doubts, the disappointments, the beliefs that have held you back—those are just narratives you’ve inherited or created along the way. And here’s the truth: you get to choose which stories you continue to believe.
The Glasses You’ve Been Wearing
The way you see the world—how you experience joy, pain, success, and failure—has been shaped by the lens of your past experiences. Many of us unknowingly adopted a childhood belief that sounds something like:
“I’m not good enough.”
And without realizing it, we’ve spent decades looking at life through that filter—finding “proof” in every setback, every rejection, every challenge.
But what if that’s not the truth?
What if the only thing keeping you stuck is the glasses you’ve been wearing?
The Invitation—A New Way Forward
I invite you to walk with me on this journey of rewriting your story.
For some of you, that may mean deeper healing—through practices like EMDR, therapy, or bodywork to release old wounds that have settled into your mind and body. For others, it may be as simple as doing the exercises I share here and stepping into a coaching space that propels you forward.
Wherever you are, you are not stuck.
But first, we need to identify the glasses you’ve been wearing up until now. Grab a journal and reflect on these questions:
- Who do I believe myself to be?
- What are my struggles?
- What are my strengths?
- What experiences do I believe have shaped me?
- What meaning did I assign to those events?
You were created with unlimited potential—and no, that potential did not expire when you hit middle age or beyond. The only thing standing in your way is the old lens you’ve been looking through.
It’s time to take them off.
Stay tuned for the next step in freeing yourself and becoming exactly who God created you to be. You are closer than you think. 💛
